Rogge praises London’s ‘flexibility’ on security

LONDON (AP) — IOC President Jacques Rogge has praised the “good show of flexibility” by Olympic organizers to bring in Army troops to fill the shortfall in security guards for the London Games.
Rogge says he is not worried by the failure of private security firm G4S to recruit sufficient staff, forcing the British government to call up an additional 3,500 troops for the Olympics.
Rogge says the deployment of extra soldiers is “something that give us tranquility in the field of security.”
The extra deployment is over and above the 7,500 troops already assigned to help guard about 100 venues and sensitive sites.
Despite the heavy military presence, Rogge says the games will not be overwhelmed by security.
He says soldiers “will not be running around with machine guns,” and security measures will “definitely not spoil the party.”
